The South African Police Service (SAPS) including the country’s intelligence community have assured the Police Ministry that all necessary safety precautions are in place to safeguard all major events this weekend, including the ceremony to handover a certificate of recognition to King Misuzulu ka Zwelithini in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
The assurance came as the Ministry on Friday, 28 October 2022, received a comprehensive security report from the SAPS, on the measures in place ahead of the Zulu King’s certificate handover hosted at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
Following the briefing by the SAPS, Police Minister, Bheki Cele addressed operational members of the SAPS, deployed to the handover ceremony.
The members include specialised units of the service, the eThekwini metro police, and road traffic law enforcement agencies who will be deployed in and around the precinct of the Durban event.
The heightened deployment is in response to the expected high volumes of around 48 thousand attendees including dignitaries from within our borders and beyond.
Cele said police would be out in full force to safeguard major events. ”Threat or not, police are ready to safeguard all four major events hosted in South Africa, that’s their job, whether the occasion is in KZN, Gauteng, or Western Cape, police will be on hand to ensure all the planned events, including the handover ceremony in Durban will be among the safest events.”
Cel encouraged invited attendees and revellers of the various events hosted during the coming weekend, to “rest assured knowing that all security measures are in place”.
