Patriotic Alliance Deputy President and Africa News Global owner Kenny Kunene has explained why police stumbled on him outside the home of one of the key suspects in the 2022 murder of DJ Oupa John Sefoka, popularly known as DJ Sumbody.

On Monday (21 July) police descended on the property of Sandton businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe, and arrested him at his home in the affluent suburb. Police found Kunene outside Molefe’s home and questioned him before entering the house and arresting Molefe, who is accused of playing a central role in orchestrating the hit on DJ Sumbody.

At the time of his arrest, Molefe was already out on bail for other serious offences. Molefe is accused with Micheal Pule Tau, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, Musa Kekana. They face three counts of murder and conspiracy to commit murder following the November 2022 killing of Sefoka, and his two bodyguards, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza. The trio were ambushed in a hail of bullets in Woodmead, Johannesburg, in what police believe was a planned execution.

Kunene who was accompanied by a journalist at Africa News Global, an online news platform he owns, explained that he did not know Molefe and that he had no relationship at all with him.

“I was accompanying a young journalist who is among a group of young people I am in the process of handing my online news platform, Africa News Global, over to. Since I became a public office bearer, I have not had time to do any of my former publishing work on this news site and felt it would help aspiring journalists to get a start in life if they take it over and run it, without my involvement. I’ve been in this process of handing it over to them for a few weeks.”

Kunene added: “To get traction and revenue for the site again, they needed to find some good exclusive stories, which the site used to be known for. Through a contact of mine, Jabu, we were able to arrange an interview with KT Molefe at his home. It must be stressed that he (Molefe) was not a fugitive at the time and we were seeking him out for news value alone”. Kunene said his contact sent him the location for where he was and we they went there for the interview.

“We weren’t there long before the police arrived and arrested Molefe on charges of alleged involvement in the murder of musician Oupa John Sefoka. The police also wanted explanations for what we were doing there and I showed them how the location pin had been sent to me, along with why we were there, which the police accepted.”

Kunene emphasized that he has no association whatsoever with Molefe and “we have had no dealings whatsoever”. Molefe is also facing trial for the hit-style killing of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart in April 2024. Molefe along with his co-accused, appeared in the Alexandra magistrate’s court on Tuesday (July 22). The court granted the state a seven-day postponement to allow for further investigation and verification of new information in the 2022 murder case.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said the state would oppose bail.
