In a surprising turn of events, the Patriotic Alliance (PA) has expelled Bonginkosi Khanyile, its KwaZulu-Natal premier candidate and youth wing leader, following his unauthorized attendance at a rally organized by the newly formed Umkhonto we Sizwe party. Party leaders Gayton McKenzie and Kenny Kunene officially announced the expulsion on Wednesday, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining party discipline.
Khanyile, a former student activist, addressed the Umkhonto we Sizwe event alongside former president Jacob Zuma, who has pledged his support to the emerging political party. During the event, Zuma called Khanyile to the stage, announcing in isiZulu that Khanyile would be actively campaigning with them in the upcoming year.
Before his expulsion, Khanyile responded to videos circulating online of his participation in the Umkhonto we Sizwe event. In a video statement, he asserted that he did not require permission to attend any party event and expressed irritation at those sharing the footage. However, hours later, Khanyile issued an apology using a PA banner, clarifying that his attendance was in support of Zuma, whom he regards as a father and not an indication of affiliation with Umkhonto we Sizwe.
Despite the apology, the PA deemed Khanyile’s actions as a dismissible offense, citing concerns that his appearance at a rival political party’s event could be misinterpreted as the PA endorsing Umkhonto we Sizwe. The party stressed that Khanyile’s actions had brought both him and the PA into disrepute, necessitating a firm and decisive response.
In response, Khanyile acknowledged his mistake, apologized for addressing the Umkhonto we Sizwe gathering, and affirmed his continued loyalty to the PA. The party announced that it would soon reveal Khanyile’s replacement from its “strong crop” of youth leaders. The PA remains focused on upholding its principles and preventing any perception of affiliation with rival political entities.
